چکیده

Independent component analysis (ICA) is possibly the most widespread approach to solve the blind source separation problem. Many different algorithms have been proposed, together with several highly successful applications. There is also an extensive body of work on the theoretical foundations and limits of the ICA methodology. One practical concern about the use of ICA with real world data is the robustness of its estimates. Slight variations in the estimates, may stem from the inherent stochastic nature of the algorithms used or some deviations from the theoretical assumptions. To overcome this problem, different approaches have been proposed, most of which are based on the use of multiple runs of ICA algorithms with bootstrap. Here we show the consistency and asymptotic normality of FastICA and bootstrap FastICA, based on empirical process theory, including Z-estimators and Hoeffding’s inequality. These results give theoretical grounds for the robust use of FastICA, in a multiple run, bootstrap and randomly initialized manner. In this framework, it is also possible to assess the convergence of the algorithm through a normality test. & 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An Introduction to Independent Component Analysis: InfoMax and FastICA algorithms

This paper presents an introduction to independent component analysis (ICA). Unlike principal component analysis, which is based on the assumptions of uncorrelatedness and normality, ICA is rooted in the assumption of statistical independence. Foundations and basic knowledge necessary to understand the technique are provided hereafter. Also included is a short tutorial illustrating the implemen...

The squared symmetric FastICA estimator

In this paper we study the theoretical properties of the deflation-based FastICA method, the original symmetric FastICA method, and a modified symmetric FastICA method, here called the squared symmetric FastICA. This modification is obtained by replacing the absolute values in the FastICA objective function by their squares. In the deflation-based case this replacement has no effect on the esti...

Some Asymptotic Results of Kernel Density Estimator in Length-Biased Sampling

In this paper, we prove the strong uniform consistency and asymptotic normality of the kernel density estimator proposed by Jones [12] for length-biased data. The approach is based on the invariance principle for the empirical processes proved by Horváth [10]. All simulations are drawn for different cases to demonstrate both, consistency and asymptotic normality and the method is illustrated by ...

Asymptotic Analysis of Bias of FastICA-based Algorithms in Presence of Additive Noise

The idea that common blind techniques based on Independent Component Analysis (ICA) behave in noisy environment like a biased MMSE separator (sometimes called Maximum Ratio Combiner (MRC)) was introduced in our recent work [3]. In this paper, we put this in more precise terms by doing an analysis of the bias of approaches that are based on known ICA algorithm FastICA. We show that the one-unit ...
